When a vertebral body (bone) becomes infected it is referred to as osteomyelitis. In the spine, this can cause pain. Typically, this spinal infection spreads by way of a vessel. In the case of the lower spine, the veins that are associated with the pelvis can be a welcome route for bacteria to enter the spine – causing the infection or osteomyelitis.
