There has been an increased incidence of spinal epidural abscess over the past decade. The reported incidence of the disease, however, is only 1.2 per 10,000 hospital admissions. Patients are most often age 60 years or older; men and women are equally affected. Factors that contribute to the relative increased incidence of epidural abscess include an increase in intravenous drug use and an increase in the number of immunocompromised hosts secondary to malignancy or human immunodeficiency virus and/or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.¹
